106. The Strange Death of the Liberal University in Britain?

3:30–4:45 p.m., 406B, LA Convention Center

A special session

Presiding: Cora L. Kaplan, Southampton Univ.

Speakers: Derek Attridge, Univ. of York; Michele Barrett, Queen Mary, Univ. of London; Josephine McDonagh, King’s Coll., London; Rick Rylance, Exeter Univ.

Intensified by recession, changes in the philosophy, management, and conduct of higher education in Britain reflect a longer term, fundamental shift of priorities, driven by business-oriented government, which controls the funding of research and teaching. The fortunes of the humanities and of literary studies in our two countries are closely tied, and this roundtable of leading academics in English will discuss the reconfiguration of research and teaching in British universities.
