251. The Reception of Israeli Culture Abroad: Literature, Music, and Film
12:00 noon–1:15 p.m., 304A, LA Convention Center
Program arranged by the Discussion Group on Hebrew Literature
Presiding: Yael S. Feldman, New York Univ. Speakers: Liane Alitowski, McGill Univ.; Bedrettin Aytaç, Ankara Univ.; Michael Figueroa, Univ. of Chicago; Donny Inbar, Jewish Community Federation; Dan Laor, Tel Aviv Univ.; Vered Shemtov, Stanford Univ. As translated biblical narratives, Hebrew literature played an enormous role in the development of Western literatures. Yet modern Israeli writers’ engagement with this ancient text also participates in a wider conversation with Western literatures that are already invested with core Hebrew texts. Brief presentations will be followed by discussion of the roles of Israeli literature, film, and music in a variety of ethnic communities and national forums since the revival of Hebrew literature in the modern era.
