658. Florence Howe and Feminist Studies: A Creative Conversation
10:15–11:30 a.m., 411, LA Convention Center
Presiding: Gloria Jacobs, Feminist Press Speakers: Florence Howe, Graduate Center, City Univ. of New York; Shirley Geok-lin Lim, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara; Rosemary G. Feal, MLA
Florence Howe has been an important activist for women’s studies, both as a leader at the MLA and as the founder and publisher of the Feminist Press, which is forty years old in 2010. Her goals have been to publish literary works that have been left out of the literary canon and academic curricula, to increase women’s presence in major academic organizations like the MLA, and to publish information about women’s presence in the academic environment. We will explore the goals of feminist publishing in 1970 and today: What, if anything, has changed? Why do we need feminist publications?
This session has been moved from 7:00–8:15 p.m. to 10:15–11:30 a.m. Gloria Steinem, previously listed as a speaker, will not be participating in this panel.
