789. Teaching and Translating Austrian Literature and Culture

This session will probe a variety of ideas about teaching and translating Austrian literature. We include in the term literature verbal and cinematic texts, autobiographical texts, and novels. Case studies will include the English translation of Franz Werfel’s Vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh as the first Holocaust novel, Christoph Ransmayr’s thematizing of translation in Die letzte Welt, Peter Henisch’s autobiographical exploration of his father’s Nazi past in Negatives of My Father, and the film adaptation of Elfriede Jelinek’s The Piano Teacher. The session will conclude with a discussion of the specific examples of Austrian literature used across the curriculum.
