A special session

The Keywords Project, a research initiative of the University of Pittsburgh Department of English and Jesus College of Cambridge University, seeks to carry forward the work that Raymond Williams launched in his book Keywords, which bore the subtitle “a vocabulary of culture and society.” Keywords was an extended word list that took crucial terms in contemporary social and political debate and used their philological history to engage with their contradictory contemporary uses and meanings. Its combination of solid scholarship with current relevance offers a model for how work in the humanities can prove socially significant. This session will present the project and demonstrate its new Web site, scheduled to launch 5 January 2011.
