117. The Faulkner-Oprah File: The Summer of Faulkner
3:30–4:45 p.m., Diamond Salon 2, J. W. Marriott
Program arranged by the William Faulkner Society
Presiding: Jaime Harker, Univ. of Mississippi

This panel uses the five-year anniversary of Oprah’s summer of Faulkner to consider its larger literary and cultural implications. For many, this alliance between Oprah and Faulkner was unlikely, if not treacherous, pop culture schlock merged with modernist complexity and profundity. The panel suggests, however, that the summer of Faulkner complicates such simple binaries, suggesting the long interdependence of highbrow writers, the literary marketplace, and popular culture.
