As translated biblical narratives, Hebrew literature played an enormous role in the development of Western literatures. Yet modern Israeli writers’ engagement with this ancient text also participates in a wider conversation with Western literatures that are already invested with core Hebrew texts. Brief presentations will be followed by discussion of the roles of Israeli literature, film, and music in a variety of ethnic communities and national forums since the revival of Hebrew literature in the modern era.
