The session will trace different time periods in the evolution of European dramatic literature, with the aim of demonstrating that modern theater only rediscovered the absurdist language, comical devices, and techniques of distanciation and foregrounding in use since the Renaissance. A thesis will be proposed for the audience’s reflection: What does it take for tragedy to become absurdism?
