Session DetailsSunday, 09 January 689. Learning Communities 8:30–9:45 a.m., Platinum Salon F, J. W. Marriott Program arranged by the Discussion Group on the Two-Year College Presiding: Michelle S. Pacht, LaGuardia Community Coll., City Univ. of New York Speakers: Heather L. Barrack, Bergen Community Coll., NJ; Susannah Mary Chewning, Union County Coll., NJ; Susan Kilgard, Anne Arundel Community Coll., MD; Miles McCrimmon, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community Coll., VA; Zivah Perel, Queensborough Community Coll., City Univ. of New York; Suzanne Jacqueline Spoor, Anne Arundel Community Coll., MD Participants will discuss their experiences in teaching English in learning communities—sets of paired classes in which one set of students is taught and supported by two faculty members on related topics. Research is beginning to demonstrate that learning communities are successful for some types of learners, but there are also issues that may make them less successful. We will discuss the positive effects of learning communities and provide examples of how to set them up more effectively.
