2:00–5:00 p.m., 203-B, Pennsylvania Convention Center
Program arranged by the MLA Committee on the Status of Women in the Profession
Presiding: Rosemary Erickson Johnsen, Governors State Univ.
Speakers: Rebecca Weld Bushnell, Univ. of Pennsylvania; Mary N. Layoun, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison; Valerie B. Lee, Ohio State Univ., Columbus; Michael Carl Schoenfeldt, Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Kathleen M. Woodward, Univ. of Washington, Seattle
This workshop will introduce participants to the problems and possibilities of assuming administrative leadership within their institutions and build leadership skills. The workshop will begin with a roundtable of five academic leaders who have held different positions of administrative responsibility in their institutions, including department chair, head of a university tenure committee, head of a humanities center, dean, and associate dean. The roundtable will be followed by an extended question period. The second half of the workshop will involve small break-out groups.
Among the issues under consideration at the workshop will be the shift in vision required to move from faculty to administrative posts, time management, work-life balance, relations with former faculty colleagues, and the satisfactions and drawbacks of administrative work. Preregistration is required.
