Subject: Shared Governance
The erosion of shared governance appears to be accelerating today as university administrations can now justify their unilateral actions by claiming "financial problems." This panel "Shared Governance: Who's Running This Place?" and the Academic Freedom and Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee who organized it made tremendous contribution to our profession by gathering well-informed panelists and providing a space for an engaged conversation about this critical issue. I have been personally affected by the lack of shared governance at my university (my tenure-track position has been eliminated and I'm being laid off by a questionable action unilaterally taken by the administration), but it was tremendously encouraging to me to learn at this panel that there are may others who care about the issue of shared governance. My heartfelt thanks to the panelists, the audience, and the expert chairing by Professor June Howard.
One of the latest books on the issue is Benjamin Ginsberg's _The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters_ (Oxford UP, 2011).
