1. Saying Yes Strategically, Saying No Constructively: A Preconvention Workshop for Junior Faculty Members

2:00–5:00 p.m., 202-B, Pennsylvania Convention Center

Program arranged by the ADE Executive Committee

Presiding: Katherine A. Rowe, Bryn Mawr Coll.

Presider's Annotation:
This is a hands-on negotiation workshop for newly hired faculty. If all goes well, it will provide an opportunity to:

• discuss practical negotiation strategies that you can take home to your own institutions and implement immediately;

• give you a focused period of time to reflect on your own interests and practice those strategies.

Speakers: Brannon W. Costello, Louisiana State Univ., Baton Rouge; Katherine A. Rowe

In their first years of employment, newly hired faculty members face daunting institutional and professional service opportunities and demands. Graduate study provides little precedent for navigating this aspect of a working academic life.

This workshop uses structured dialogue and role-playing activities to help participants think strategically about requests for service. Participants will practice negotiating skills on both sides of the negotiation: how to ask for service contributions as well as how to field such requests in collegial ways. Participants will leave with strategies they can apply at their home institutions.

The workshop helps new faculty members learn to decode and assess a wide range of service requests, navigate the culture of their home institutions successfully, prioritize their labor, choose paths through service as they do through scholarship, and practice saying yes and no constructively. Preregistration is required.
