Hillis Miller, Univ. of California, Irvine Session Description: Past MLA presidents discuss the Common Core State Standards Initiative (www.corestandards.org), a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The standards purport to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare students for college and the workforce. Once implemented, a national core curriculum will have enormous consequences for the study of languages, literature, and textuality.
