The 2007 MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages report, “Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World,” proposed new approaches to meeting the crisis facing foreign language instruction in colleges and universities. But the report fails to address the role that community colleges play in the landscape of higher education in the United States. This panel explores pedagogical and interinstitutional issues raised by the recommendations of the report and asks how the proposed shift in foreign language teaching will alter the traditional relation between community colleges and four-year institutions.
