Session Description: How can we explain the enduring presence of diva and folkloric performers in twentieth-century Spanish culture? Panelists will present briefly on folclórica culture in the 1910s and 1920s, folclóricas as working women, transgressive and conservative filmic roles in the Franco era, folkloric performers' excessive Spanishness, divas' transatlantic and gay appeal, and the formation of conflicting fan groups. Half the session will be devoted to discussion.
