249. Career Options in Translation for Language Students
12:00 noon–1:15 p.m., 410, LA Convention Center
A special session
Presiding: Nicholas Hartmann, American Translators Assn.
Speakers: Brian James Baer, Kent State Univ., Kent; Carol S. Maier, Kent State Univ., Kent; Alan Melby, Brigham Young Univ., UT; Alexander Rainof, California State Univ., Long Beach; Jiri Stejskal, International Federation of Translators; Caitilin Walsh, American Translators Assn.
This session is for any faculty member who teaches a foreign language. We know that few of our students will end up with a full-time faculty position in a language department, yet they love language and literature and would like to apply their knowledge and skills in their professional lives. The presenters in this session are all involved in some aspect of translation or interpreting and will describe the specialization they have followed and how language students can prepare themselves. Specific suggestions will be given on how to include in a language degree program an elective course introducing translation and interpreting.
