734. American Literature, Disciplinarity, and Interdisciplinary Studies
10:15–11:30 a.m., Plaza I, J. W. Marriott
A special session
Presiding: David R. Shumway, Carnegie Mellon Univ.
Speakers: Jonathan Arac, Univ. of Pittsburgh; Susan Gillman, Univ. of California, Santa Cruz; June Howard, Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor; George Sanchez, Univ. of Southern California
This session reconsiders the enterprise of literary studies in the light of two challenges: internal critiques of its assumptions and procedures and the growth of interdisciplinarity. The panelists’ contested common ground is the study of American literature and culture, but the point will be to question what it means to be an Americanist.
