A 2011 Convention Quiz

Photo of Rosemary G. FealIt’s January. Shouldn’t I be wandering around in a postconvention stupor instead of racing about in preconvention excitement? It feels quite disorienting (and exhilarating) to begin the annual meeting at a time other than between Christmas and New Year’s. Speaking of racing, among the new things I’ll be doing this year is participating in the MLA Fun Run on Saturday morning. This event was organized on Twitter, and that’s where you will find many convention attendees talking about the convention while it’s happening. Look for tweets marked #MLA11 to see what they are saying, and join in! That’s where you’ll find me, too. Because most of my communications will be in the form of tweets (follow @mlaconvention on Twitter), I’ve asked the other three officers if they would help me by contributing to this blog. Over the next few days, you’ll hear from Michael Bérubé, Sidonie Smith, and Russell Berman on aspects of the convention that they wish to highlight for attendees.

Last year I blogged about seven things that were on my daily schedule. This year, I offer you a seven-question quiz. Answers below.
1) What Hollywoodesque activity will be going on in the MLA exhibit booth? Hint: it’s a scheduled activity.

2) Some convention attendees are going “off campus” to participate in cultural excursions. Where to? Hint: Rodeo Drive may be cultural, but it’s not one of our three destinations.

3) What prize will the book Shell Shock Cinema receive at the Awards Ceremony on Friday evening? Hint: None of our prizes are named after elected officials.

4) What is a “speaker ready room”? Hint: it’s one of those meeting planner terms. Like precon, fam trip, or BEO.

5) Will there be Love in the Afternoon at the MLA? Hint: see hint #1.

6) Where can you go to get Close to Chuck at half-price? Hint: it’s in walking distance of our hotels.

7) Where and when can attendees chat with members of the Program Committee about anything having to do with the substance of the annual meeting? Hint: that convention booth is going to be very busy! Further hint: for urgent matters, please go to MLA Headquarters located in Studio 3, 3rd floor, of the J. W. Marriott, and Meeting Room 401, level 2, of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
