About the Department

The Department offers the M.A., the M.F.A. in poetry or fiction, and the Ph.D. with concentrations in literary studies, rhetoric and composition, and creative writing. For well-qualified students, the Department offers a variety of financial aid instruments, which may include tuition waivers, research assistantships, laboratory assistantships (for tutoring in the Center for Writing and Research), and teaching assistantships. GRAs, GLAs, and GTAs receive both practical and financial support. The Department also actively supports the Graduate English Association's goals to assist graduate students by providing helpful teaching resources, professional development tips, and a sense of community.

Presently there are 45 graduate faculty, and we plan to expand that number with new hires in the coming years. In general, each of the traditonal period and genre specialties in literature and language in English; Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Writing; and Creative Writing are represented by two or three graduate faculty members, and we have strong positions in literary theory, post-colonial literature, and African-American Literature. We also maintain a productive liaison with programs that train secondary teachers of writing and literature. We have graduate exchange programs with American and British studies programs in England, Germany, and Italy.
