About the JILThe JIL is an electronic database that job seekers can search by field or language; by geographic region; by key words or phrases in a job description (e.g., "women's studies," "Romanticism," or "drama"); and by rank. Graduate students and faculty members in ADE- and ADFL-member departments are allowed free access to the list through the ADE (www.ade.org) and ADFL (www.adfl.org) Web sites. Access requires a user name and password. Those who do not belong to an ADE- or ADFL-member department may gain access to search the JIL online by becoming affiliate members of either the ADE (to search the English edition) or the ADFL (to search the foreign language edition).Listings primarily announce full-time academic job openings in postsecondary departments of English and foreign languages. The job openings range in rank from instructor to full professor and include faculty positions, administrative posts, vacancies abroad, and some opportunities for nonacademic employment. About two-thirds are openings at the rank of assistant professor. The JIL will be available online beginning 12 September through 15 July 2009 for the 2008-09 subscription period. FeaturesWeekly Updates: In order to make job listings available in a more timely manner for job seekers, especially in the period before the MLA convention, the JIL will be updated weekly. Every Friday, all new listings submitted in the previous seven days will be added to the online database. Job seekers have the option to search the database for only those listings posted since a specified date. New listings remain online for six, eight, or twelve weeks. The hiring department may then choose to renew the listing for an additional period online; otherwise the job announcement is removed from the online database.English and Foreign Language Editions: The JIL appears in two separate editions: an English edition, containing information from departments of English and American language and literature and a foreign language edition, with listings from departments of foreign languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Middle Eastern and Asian languages, etc.). Identical information from comparative literature and linguistics departments, and in English as a second language, is included in both the English and foreign language editions, as are notices for nonacademic employment. Print Version: A print version of the JIL is sent to ADE- and ADFL-member departments four times a year: October, December, February, and April. The primary purposes of the printed lists are to provide departments with a documentary record of their job searches and to assist departments that hire foreign nationals to meet the tear-sheet requirements of the U.S. Immigration regulations. The print version is not available to individuals.
