Access to the MLA Job Information List Database

Access to search the MLA Job Information List database is through membership in either the Association of Departments of English (ADE) or the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL). Printable PDF files of the JIL are available free of charge on the MLA Web site.

Departmental Membership

Access to search the JIL database is free to graduate students and faculty members in departments that are members of the ADE or the ADFL. If your current department or the department from which you received your graduate degree is a member, it can provide you with the department ID and password to log in at the ADE or ADFL Web site. (If you need more information about accessing the JIL, you may write to JILeditor@mla.org.) When you log in, you will be asked to create your own personal log-in information for searching the JIL from the ADE or ADFL Web site. Note: you must create a new ADE or ADFL personal log-in for 2012–13 to search beginning in September; personal log-ins from previous years will not be recognized.

Affiliate Membership

Individuals not currently affiliated with an ADE- or ADFL-member department or whose graduate school department is not an ADE- or ADFL-member department can access the JIL database by becoming affiliate members of the ADE or the ADFL. Like students and faculty members in ADE- and ADFL-member departments, ADE and ADFL affiliate members receive access to the online archive of the ADE and the ADFL bulletins as well as rights to search both the English and foreign language listings in the JIL online database. Dues for affiliate memberships are $40 for MLA members and $65 for nonmembers. Affiliate memberships can be purchased online beginning in August with a credit card and are for the use of a single individual only. Printable PDF editions of the JIL are available at no charge at the MLA Web site (www.mla.org/jil_issues).

If you already have an affiliate membership, you can follow the links under Departmental Membership above to log in to the ADE or ADFL Web sites to search the listings; or, if you are an MLA member, log in at www.mla.org/jil.

MLA Members' Benefit: Searching the JIL

If your department is a member of the ADE or the ADFL, you will be able to search the Job Information List directly from the members' section of the MLA Web site by following these steps:

  1. Log in with your MLA membership user name and password at http://www.mla.org. You may retrieve your user name and password at http://www.mla.org/member_changepw.
  2. Follow the link to the Job Information List under the "Quick Links" section of the home page.
  3. Select the edition of the JIL (English or Foreign Language) that you'd like to search.

Free access to search the MLA Job Information List database continues to be a benefit of departmental membership in ADE and ADFL. If the department information in your MLA member record is incomplete or incorrect, you'll be given the opportunity to update your profile so that we can check on your department's membership status. You can also access the JIL database by becoming an ADE or ADFL affiliate member for $40 (see above).
