Executive Council Issues Statement on Language Learning and National Policy

The MLA’s Executive Council has issued a statement on the importance of language learning to the future of the United States. The statement maintains that in an increasingly interdependent world, knowledge of languages other than English is crucial to trade, national security, and a broader understanding of other cultures. Further, learning a second language deepens knowledge of one’s native language and may enhance other critical cognitive functions.
