Professional Development Workshop for Community College Faculty Members at the 2008 Convention
The Committee on Community Colleges and the Executive Council are sponsoring a professional development workshop for community college faculty members at the MLA Annual Convention in San Francisco on the afternoon of 27 December 2008. Participants do not have to be MLA members or register for the MLA convention to attend the free workshop. The workshop is limited to fifty participants.
MLA President Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, authors of They Say, I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, will lead the workshop, "Teaching the Central Move of Academic Writing," on teaching students to navigate academic argumentation. The workshop is geared toward English and foreign language professors and will feature a discussion of how we might apply these ideas to our work with our students as well as in our own writing. There will be breakout sessions so that foreign language and English faculty members can have conversations tailored to their needs.
The workshop, to be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., will be followed by a reception. Attendees at last year’s reception in Chicago commented that they enjoyed the chance to meet socially with other community college faculty members and to share ideas over snacks and drinks.
The Executive Council has voted to allot funds to provide professional development grants of $300 so that MLA nonstudent members employed at two-year institutions can attend this workshop.
To apply for admission to the workshop, community college faculty members should fill out the application and submit it by 1 November 2008 to the Office of Special Projects at the MLA by mail (26 Broadway, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10004-1789) or fax (646 835-4067). Fax transmissions may be used to meet the deadline, but they must be followed by signed applications. MLA members who are applying for a professional development grant are encouraged to request matching funds from their departments or institutions by using a letter provided by the MLA (available here ). The council wants to make institutions aware of the importance of supporting all instructional staff members in their professional development activities.
Questions about the workshop may be addressed to Rosemary G. Feal (rfeal@mla.org).
