Profession

Membership in the MLA includes a subscription to Profession. Profession is a journal of opinion about and for the modern language profession. The editor selects articles covering a range of topics of professional concern, trying to give a voice to MLA members working in diverse subject areas and situations. Accordingly, the editor invites essays of 1,800 to 5,000 words on current intellectual, curricular, and professional trends and issues that are of importance to the field, essays that can be read with interest and profit by many, if not all, MLA members. Letters to the editor and short comments on articles in the previous year's Profession will also be considered for publication. Such letters and comments will not normally exceed 800 words. The journal does not carry articles by the same author two years in a row.

Two members of the Profession Advisory Committee will read and evaluate each submission. Taking into account these advisory readings and additional comments from the directors of the MLA offices of English and foreign language programs, the editor will make final decisions on publication.

Profession is published annually, in December. The submission deadline for each issue is 15 March. (However, in years when that date falls over a weekend, the submission deadline will be the following Monday.) Members and nonmembers may submit articles. Authors should submit only one copy of their manuscripts; a return envelope is not necessary. The surface address is Profession, MLA, 26 Broadway, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10004-1789. Submission by e-mail is also possible; MS Word is the preferred file format. Documentation should conform to the MLA Style Manual. Editorial inquiries should be addressed to profession@mla.org.
