Access to Search the MLA Job Information List
JIL Update:
- ADE and ADFL affiliate memberships are no longer available for purchase online for the 2008–09 membership period.
- The online JIL will be closed for maintenance beginning 1 August and will reopen for searching beginning 18 September.
- Current affiliate memberships and ADE- and ADFL-department personal logins will expire on 1 August.
- Individuals may purchase affiliate memberships online for 2009–10 beginning 4 August. New ADE- and ADFL-department personal logins for 2009–10 can be created in August as well; see your department chair for details.
All access to search the MLA Job Information List is now through membership in either the Association of Departments of English (ADE) or the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL).
Departmental Membership
Access to search the JIL is free to graduate students and faculty members in departments that are members of the ADE or the ADFL. If your department is a member, it can provide you with the department ID and password to log in at the ADE or ADFL Web site. When you log in, you will be asked to create your own personal login information for searching the JIL at that site. Note: you must create a new personal login for 2009-10 beginning in August; personal logins from previous years will not be recognized.
Affiliate Membership
Individuals without an academic affiliation or whose departments are not currently members of the ADE or the ADFL can access the JIL by becoming affiliate members of the ADE or the ADFL. Like students and faculty members in ADE- and ADFL-member departments, ADE and ADFL affiliate members receive access to the online archive of the ADE or the ADFL Bulletins as well as rights to search the JIL database over the Internet. (Print versions of the JIL are no longer available to individuals.) Dues for affiliate memberships are $40 for MLA members and $65 for nonmembers. Affiliate memberships can be purchased online beginning in August with a credit card and are for the use of a single individual only.
If you already have an affiliate membership, you can follow the links under Departmental Membership above to log in to the ADE or ADFL Web sites to search the listings; or, if you are an MLA member, log in at www.mla.org/jil.
MLA Members' Benefit: Searching the JIL
If your department is a member of the Association of Departments of English (ADE) or the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL), you will be able to search the Job Information List directly from the members' section of the MLA Web site by following these steps:
- Log in with your MLA membership user name and password at http://www.mla.org. You may retrieve or change your user name and password at http://www.mla.org/member_changepw.
- Follow the link to the Job Information List under the "Quick Links" section of the home page.
- Select the edition of the JIL (English or Foreign Language) that you'd like to search.
Free access to search the online MLA Job Information List continues to be a benefit of departmental membership in ADE and ADFL. If the department information in your MLA member record is incomplete or incorrect, you'll be given the opportunity to update your profile so that we can check on your department's membership status. If your department is not currently a member of ADE or ADFL, let us know online and we'll send your department chair an invitation to join. You can also access the JIL by becoming an ADE or ADFL affiliate member for $40 (see above).
