Quick Tour: Comparing Maps
Printer friendly page Printer-friendly page
Progress:
MLA Language Map You can use the MLA Language Map to compare two languages in the same state or one language in two states. The tools for the comparison page are located beneath the maps.

Choose a language and state for each map. For instance, select French and Louisiana on the left and click Show Map. Then select English and Louisiana on the right and click Show Map. You must click Show Map for each map. English is spoken more than French in every parish in Louisiana (Louisiana has parishes rather than counties).

Zoom out to compare Louisiana with the surrounding states. For each map, turn on the "Zoom out" tool Zoom Out, place your pointer on Louisiana, and click. We see in the left map that the number of French speakers is greater in Louisiana than in the surrounding states.

To compare French with another language in Louisiana, select "Spanish" from the drop-down menu on the right and click Show Map. The maps show that there are more French speakers than Spanish speakers in Louisiana (except in one parish in the southeast) and that there are many more Spanish speakers than French speakers to the north and west of Louisiana.
