MLA Language Map The MLA Language Map also displays percentages of speakers by county. Select "radial button % by county." Because languages vary greatly in density, different percentage ranges are used for each language. The percentage legend for Hmong will replace the one for English when you update the map.
  • Scroll down in "Language" and select "Miao, Hmong." Click Update Map.
  • The map shows that there are concentrations of Hmong speakers in California, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. Select Wisconsin from the "State" menu, and click Update Map.
  • Check "County names" in the Layers section, and click "Update map" to find the name of the county that has the highest concentration of Hmong speakers.
The names Miao and Hmong are used by many speakers interchangeably, but some consider Miao derogatory.
