Quick Tour: Getting State Data
Printer friendly page Printer-friendly page
Progress:
MLA Language Map Data Center Function 1. To search by state, click on the "State" tab, and make a selection from the drop-down menu.
  • Select "Ohio." Then select "2000." In functions 1 and 2 you can look at data from either 2000 or 2005 or compare 2000 and 2005 data.
  • Click Show Results. (Only the upper portion of the table is shown here.)
  • Click "Show age breakdown" to see the numbers by age group. We learn that 5,450 speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch in Ohio are of ages five to seventeen.
  • The table of languages spoken in Ohio is sorted by rank. The languages most commonly spoken in the state, English, Spanish, and German, are grouped at the top of the list. You can also sort alphabetically.
  • Clicking on any of the language names in the table will create a pop-up box with the number of speakers of that language who speak English "well" or "very well" and who speak it "not well" or "not well at all," by age. Click on Arabic.
